The Grand Ella Motel is found in the hill-country of Sri Lanka in the small, popular town of Ella. Ella is backpacker central in the Southern Highlands, a stirring land of lush tea plantations, majestic peaks and rushing waterfalls. An ideal stopping point on a round tour, Ella benefits from being a station on the stunning Kandy to Badulla train line- famous for its winding route through the beautiful heart of Sri Lanka.
Grand Ella Motel might have an unpromising name, and equally it might be run by the Ceylon Hotel Corporation, but it is no means your standard government-run guesthouse. It is set up high above a valley complete with soaring peaks, rushing waterfalls and boulder-strewn tea plantations and has the feel and size of a high-class guesthouse. Whilst not providing much in the way of entertainment, hours can be spent absorbing the magical panorama of the Ella Gap.
Accommodation:
The recently refurbished 14 rooms at the Grand Ella Motel are easily above normal guesthouse standard. All are spacious, clean, simply yet tastefully furnished and decorated, equipped to with TV, fan, central air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms. Many of the rooms have excellent views down the valley below.
Facilities:
Facilities at the Grand Ella Motel extend to a good restaurant which serves both western and Sri Lankan food. The restaurant extends out into the hotel’s garden which in itself is a great place to spend a few hours chilling. Around Ella there is plenty to do for the active with a number of great hill-country walks to nearby caves and waterfalls.
