Claughton House, designed by the late Geoffrey Bawa, is a charming three bedroom villa perched atop a large landscaped coconut grove near sleepy Dickwela.
With views around the sloping garden, over the swimming pool and the beaches below and beyond, the location is superb. Designed in a largely open plan fashion, the villa is supported by tall pillars across its frontage, providing a huge living area open to the view and breeze on three sides. Entering through the arched facade, one passes directly into the living space. The villa has three levels, all with fantastic views, with a breezy lounge at the foot of the building.
The property has three bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms (two of which also have outdoor showers). Sumptuously fitted, the house retains a very laid-back feel. The beach beneath the property is quiet and charming, and can be accessed from the foot of the garden. The swimming pool is built overlooking the sea and meals can be taken in the house or around the pool. There is also a bbq in the garden, ideal for sunset meals.
Claughton can be rented by the room or the entire house, and the rates are very reasonable for the quality and service provided. The friendly and unobtrusive staff take great care of their guests. Excursions can be made to Kalametiya bird sanctuary, Yala Safari Park and the beaches around Tengalle. The Claughton team also organise boat and fishing trips. If you are looking for privacy and luxury on deserted paradise beaches then Claughton House is the perfect place.
